Optimized AdministrationMacuSight has developed a proprietary minimally-invasive, sustained administration approach for its liquid sirolimus formulation that may provide key advantages over other ocular therapeutics such as Macugen®* and Lucentis™*. MacuSight's product candidate is designed to be administered through a simple periocular injection under the conjunctiva, instead of other areas of the eye (i.e. into the back of the eye, as for current locally administered therapeutics, Macugen® and Lucentis™). As a result, MacuSight believes its product candidate may offer patients and physicians a much less invasive and much more convenient procedure. This simple periocular injection, which is well-established with physicians, minimizes the risk of complications and adverse events as compared to other types of ocular injections.
MacuSight's sirolimus formulation is initially designed to sustain drug within the eye for approximately three months, enabling longer periods between administration than current wet AMD therapeutics on the market (e.g., Macugen® - every six weeks; Lucentis™ - every four weeks). As a result, office visits and drug administration costs may be significantly reduced. This is particularly important for chronic conditions such as wet AMD and DME.
Finally, less frequent and less invasive administration may be critical advantages for MacuSight's sirolimus formulation as they are essential delivery characteristics for any therapy that will be used to prevent wet AMD. This is true because more invasive injection procedures possess unacceptable risk profiles for preventive application and require frequent physician visits that are impractical for long-term prevention. Topical eye drops are also inadequate, as they present major convenience and compliance issues, particularly for the elderly population at risk for wet AMD. As such, MacuSight's sirolimus formulation is potentially positioned as the first product for wet AMD prevention. *Macugen is a registered trademark of OSI Pharmaceuticals *Lucentis is a trademark of Genentech |
