Management Team


David A. Weber, Ph.D. – President and Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Weber has a broad research and development background spanning a range of therapeutic drug and device products. Prior to joining MacuSight, Dr. Weber served as acting chief executive officer and executive vice president at Oculex Pharmaceuticals, leading the company until its acquisition by Allergan in November 2003. During his tenure, Dr. Weber led the development of Ozurdex®* (formerly known as Posurdex®*), a proprietary, biodegradable, sustained-release ocular implant for the treatment of persistent macular edema. The product was rapidly advanced through Phase 2 clinical trials and produced positive results that attracted the interest of a number of major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The clinical success of Ozurdex® ultimately led to the company's $230 million acquisition by Allergan. Allergan has since received FDA approval for Ozurdex for the treatment of macular edema associated with retinal vein occlusion.

Before his work with Oculex, Dr. Weber served as vice president of research & development at Oral-B Laboratories, where he was responsible for new product development and technology identification for a global consumer and professional oral care business comprised of regulated medical devices and chemical products. In this role, Dr. Weber led the development and launch of innovative new products strengthening market leadership and establishing a solid pipeline of new product opportunities and technology leads. Dr. Weber also held senior management positions in product, regulatory and clinical development while at Oral-B and in Health Care Product Development at The Procter & Gamble Company.

He received his Ph.D. in medical microbiology from Creighton University and his master's and bachelor's degrees in biological sciences from Wichita State University.


Shu Kurosaki, CPA – Vice President of Finance & Administration

Mr. Kurosaki brings a wealth of experience in private company financial management and oversight to MacuSight. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Kurosaki served as director of finance at Oculex Pharmaceuticals where he coordinated and oversaw the company's financial reporting and budgeting responsibilities until Oculex's acquisition by Allergan. Immediately following the acquisition, he assisted in the transition of financial responsibilities and information.

Prior to his work with Oculex, Mr. Kurosaki held the positions of controller at Lumenare Networks and manager of assurance and business advisory services at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Mr. Kurosaki, a certified public accountant in California, received his bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration on accounting and marketing from the University of California at Berkeley.


Joel Naor, M.D., M.Sc. MBA – Chief Medical Officer

With broad expertise in the clinical development of therapeutics for ocular diseases and conditions, Dr. Naor is responsible for helping to guide the strategic scientific direction of MacuSight, including the company's ongoing advancement of its Perceiva program. Formerly, as a senior medical director at Allergan, Inc., Dr. Naor was a key contributor to the medical and scientific direction of the company's two lead retina programs. In his role as the global project team leader for Allergan's Ozurdex® program, Dr. Naor oversaw a multifunctional team with responsibilities that spanned clinical development, regulatory, CMC and marketing. Most recently, he served on Allergan's global medical affairs group as a medical director, retina.

Prior to his work with Allergan, Dr. Naor was a director of clinical research at QLT, Inc. where he served as a clinical lead on the global project team for Visudyne® (verteporfin for injection).

Dr. Naor has authored numerous papers for peer review journals including Archives of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Cornea and British Journal of Ophthalmology. He earned his M.D. from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and underwent cornea and external disease training at the University of Toronto where he also obtained his M.Sc. in epidemiology. Dr Naor holds a Masters of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.


Thierry Nivaggioli, Ph.D. – Vice President of Research and Development

Dr. Nivaggioli is responsible for creating and implementing the product development program for Perceiva, MacuSight's lead product candidate. Prior to joining MacuSight, Dr. Nivaggioli held the position of director of research and formulation development at Oculex Pharmaceuticals until its acquisition by Allergan in 2003. Following the acquisition, Dr. Nivaggioli was appointed to the position of senior director, drug delivery formulations by Allergan to help ensure proper transfer of Oculex's technology and intellectual property. Dr. Nivaggioli's tenure at Oculex was highlighted by the development of a new ocular drug delivery platform that was incorporated into the company's lead product, Posurdex® (now Ozurdex®). Allergan has since received FDA approval for Ozurdex, providing validation of the novel drug delivery technology pioneered at Oculex.

Dr. Nivaggioli has also served as director of development in the Cygnus Drug Delivery Division of Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, and prior to its acquisition by Ortho-McNeil, as Cygnus' manager of research and development.

He received his Ph.D. in polymer science from the University of Toronto, his M.Sc. from the University of Bordeaux in France and his B.Sc. from the University of Paris VI. He completed his post-doctoral studies in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.


Philip D. Reilly, J.D., Ph.D. – Vice President and General Counsel

Dr. Reilly is responsible for all legal needs of the company and for assisting in identifying and securing new business opportunities to fuel MacuSight's future growth.

Dr. Reilly has been providing legal support to life science companies since 1995. Prior to joining MacuSight, Dr. Reilly was a member of the Intellectual Property practice group of Morrison & Foerster's Palo Alto office. In this role he represented pharmaceutical, materials, nanotechnology, and medical device companies, with his practice focused primarily on the acquisition of intellectual property for such companies and the commercial use of intellectual property through technology-based transactions.

Dr. Reilly is a member of the board of directors of NanatTecNexus, a San Diego based not-for-profit organization dedicated to building awareness and understanding of nanotechnology and fostering business opportunities in the application of nanotechnology in the life sciences. Dr. Reilly holds a J.D. degree with distinction from Stanford Law School, a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley and a B.Sc. in chemistry from the University of Sussex, UK. Dr. Reilly performed post-doctoral research at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He is licensed to practice law in California and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the State Bar of California, the American Bar Association, and the American Chemical Society.


Gerald Wroblewski – Vice President of Operations

At MacuSight, Mr. Wroblewski is responsible for overseeing functions related to manufacturing, product supply chain management, packaging and quality assurance. His extensive and successful career in the healthcare industry has provided him with critical operational expertise in each of these areas. Prior to joining MacuSight, Mr. Wroblewski served as chief operating officer at iScience Interventional Inc., a start-up medical device company in the ophthalmology space. Responsible for manufacturing, quality assurance and regulatory activities, he is credited with establishing the company's operations organization to support internal commercial GMP manufacturing. Before his work with iScience Interventional, Mr. Wroblewski acted as an operations consultant to Carl Zeiss Meditec, as well as senior director of manufacturing at Corgentech.

From 2001-2004, Mr. Wroblewski worked alongside many of the current MacuSight management team members at Oculex Pharmaceuticals, where he held the position of executive vice president of operations. While at Oculex, he was responsible for developing and implementing novel manufacturing systems designed to support the production of multiple product components related to the company's lead drug candidate. These innovative manufacturing platforms supported the advancement of the product into late-stage clinical trials. During his career, Mr. Wroblewski has also held senior management positions with The Gillette Company, Oral-B Laboratories and McGaw Laboratories.

Mr. Wroblewski received his masters of business administration from California State University and his bachelor of science, mechanical engineering degree from California Polytechnic State University.
