He is currently a board member at AkaRx (cancer and hematology therapeutics), Horizon Therapeutics (novel fixed dose drug combinations), NuGen Technologies (research reagents), Portola Pharmaceuticals (a spin-out of COR/Millennium focused on cardiovascular therapeutics), Restoration Robotics (aesthetic surgery devices), ROXRO PHARMA (pain therapeutics), Vivios (cancer therapeutics) and Xoft Microtube (cancer radiation devices). He also represents Sutter Hill's investments in Acceleron Pharmaceuticals (metabolic therapeutics) and BÂRRX Medical (gastrointestinal devices). He formerly served as a director at Threshold Pharmaceuticals and Idun Pharmaceuticals, which was acquired by Pfizer in 2005. Dr. Bird was previously Senior Vice President, Business Operations at Gilead Sciences, where he worked from 1988 to 1990 and then 1992 to 2000. He was primarily responsible for several alliances with major pharmaceutical companies and helped Gilead to acquire NeXstar in a $550 million transaction. His commercial responsibilities included direct sales in the U.S. and Europe which generated $150 million in annual product revenue. Dr. Bird received a degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford in 1982, a Ph.D. in Cancer Biology in 1988 and a M.D. in 1992 from Stanford Medical School. Mark Blumenkranz, M.D. - Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, Stanford University School of MedicineDr Blumenkranz is a world-renowned vitreoretinal surgeon, who in addition to his scientific and clinical endeavors has played a critical role in the establishment and successful growth of several healthcare companies. Most recently, he founded and presently serves as a director of Peak Surgical, a Palo Alto, CA-based surgical device company funded by Venrock and Lehman Brothers in 2006. He was a founding member of the Eyetech Pharmaceuticals Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) in 2000, and helped to create the development strategy and plan the clinical trials for Macugen®*, the company's lead compound. In 2004, Eyetech raised $143 million through an IPO and then grew its market cap to more than $1 billion in the following year. In 2006, the company was acquired by OSI following FDA clearance and commercial launch of Macugen, the first anti-VEGF compound approved for the treatment of exudative age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Blumenkranz also previously served on the Board of Directors and as Chairman of the SAB of privately-held Oculex Pharmaceuticals, a company that was acquired by Allergan Pharmaceuticals in 2003 for $230 million. Previously, he served as founding Chairman of the Board of Optimedica Corporation in 2004, a laser medical device company based in Santa Clara, CA and funded by Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, and Alloy Ventures. Dr. Blumenkranz has also served on the Board of Directors and as Chairman of the SAB at both Ophthalmic Imaging Systems (OIS), a medical imaging company based in Sacramento, CA, and MidLabs, an ophthalmic surgical device company based in San Leandro, CA. Dr. Blumenkranz received his Baccalaureate, Master of Medical Science in Biochemical Pharmacology, and M.D. degrees at Brown University in 1975 followed by a Residency in Ophthalmology at Stanford. He completed the Executive Program at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2004. Brian C. Cunningham - Senior Counsel and Co-Chair Life Sciences Group, Morrison & Foerster LLPMr. Cunningham possesses an impressive breadth of expertise which spans nearly every aspect of the biotechnology and biopharmaceutical industries -- from legal practice to operations. Prior to his current position with Morrison & Foerster, Mr. Cunningham served as chief executive officer of Trellis Bioscience, a biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of novel human antibody therapeutics as treatments for infectious disease and oncology indications. Before his work with Tellis Biosceince, Mr. Cunningham was Of Counsel to Cooley Godward Kronish LLP. He rejoined the firm in 2003, having previously served as a partner and the head of the firm's life sciences practice from 1989-1998. During the time between his tenures at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP, he held the positions of president and chief operating officer of Rigel Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he played a critical role in strategically growing the company into a late-stage developer of innovative pharmaceutical products. His numerous contributions to Rigel Pharmaceuticals included providing key oversight for the company's successful initial public offering in 2000. From 1982-1988, he was a member of Genentech's senior management team during a period of rapid growth for the company. Serving as Genentech's vice president, secretary and general counsel, Mr. Cunningham was responsible for completing a number of significant corporate partnering transactions with major pharmaceutical companies around the world, as well as overseeing numerous innovative financial transactions. Mr. Cunningham also presently serves as chief executive officer of Clerigen, Inc., anearly stage biopharmaceutical company. He has previously served as chief executive officer of DaoGen, Inc. and as a director of Synarc, Inc., a private, imaging-based clinical research organization. He received his J.D. in 1970 from Washington University in St. Louis and is a member of the bar in California, New York (inactive) and Missouri, as well as the American Law Institute. Nathan Every, M.D., M.P.H. - General Partner, Frazier Healthcare VenturesDr. Every, a cardiologist who has been with Frazier Healthcare Ventures since 1999, was named a General Partner in 2005. He founded MacuSight, an ocular disease therapy company that was incubated at Frazier Healthcare, and was integral to the formation of Synecor, a first-of-its-kind accelerator company backed by researchers, corporations, clinicians and a leading investment bank. Dr. Every currently serves on the board of directors at Apneon, Inc., BaroSense, Inc., BÂRRX Medical, Inc., FlowCardia, Inc., InnerPulse, Inc., Juniper, Inc., PowerVision, Inc., Synecor LLC, and Xoft, Inc. He is also an observer on the board of Alexza Pharmaceuticals. Prior to joining Frazier Healthcare, Dr. Every was an associate professor of medicine and the director of the Cardiovascular Outcomes Research Center (CORC) at the University of Washington, where he performed multiple studies evaluating the costs and outcomes of new procedures and pharmaceutical agents. Dr. Every earned an M.D. from Emory University School of Medicine and a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree from the University of Washington School of Public Health, and he is board certified in both internal and cardiovascular medicine. Gilbert H. Kliman, M.D. - General Partner, Life Sciences, InterWest PartnersDr. Kliman focuses on life sciences investing with a special interest in medical devices and ophthalmic technologies. He serves on the board of directors of a broad portfolio of InterWest life sciences companies, including IntraLase, Ophthonix, ReVision Optics, Epocrates, Archus Orthopedics, and Spiration. He was an early lead investor in IntraLase, a manufacturer of novel eye lasers for LASIK that completed a successful IPO in 2004, and Spinal Dynamics, a spine surgery device company that was acquired in 2002 by Medtronic for $270M. Prior to InterWest Partners, Dr. Kliman was a healthcare investor at TA Associates and at Norwest Venture Capital. As a practicing ophthalmologist, he was the former West Coast director of LCA Vision, a highly successful LASIK services company, and served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts New England Eye Center. Dr. Kliman received his B.A. from Harvard University, M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and M.B.A. from Stanford University. A trained retinal specialist, he performed his retina fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary with a research focus on new pharmacologic treatments for AMD. While at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, he pioneered the first successful use of photodynamic therapy for treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV), the underlying cause of vision loss from advanced AMD. David A. Weber, Ph.D. – President and Chief Executive OfficerDr. Weber has a broad research and development background spanning a range of therapeutic drug and device products. Prior to joining MacuSight, Dr. Weber served as acting chief executive officer and executive vice president at Oculex Pharmaceuticals, leading the company until its acquisition by Allergan in November 2003. During his tenure, Dr. Weber led the development of Ozurdex®* (formerly known as Posurdex®*), a proprietary, biodegradable, sustained-release ocular implant for the treatment of persistent macular edema. The product was rapidly advanced through Phase 2 clinical trials and produced positive results that attracted the interest of a number of major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The clinical success of Ozurdex® ultimately led to the company's $230 million acquisition by Allergan. Allergan has since received FDA approval for Ozurdex for the treatment of macular edema associated with retinal vein occlusion. Before his work with Oculex, Dr. Weber served as vice president of research & development at Oral-B Laboratories, where he was responsible for new product development and technology identification for a global consumer and professional oral care business comprised of regulated medical devices and chemical products. In this role, Dr. Weber led the development and launch of innovative new products strengthening market leadership and establishing a solid pipeline of new product opportunities and technology leads. Dr. Weber also held senior management positions in product, regulatory and clinical development while at Oral-B and in Health Care Product Development at The Procter & Gamble Company.
